Service Description

Instructor: Tobias Hangler Duration: 2 consecutive days, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. each Location: 8111 Gratwein (see contact / directions) Participants per course: 5-6 In this two-day course, you will forge your own knife from a piece of carbon steel. Whether it's a kitchen knife, hunting knife or table knife - you can choose a knife shape with a blade length of up to 22 cm (plus handle). On the first day, you will forge your knife into shape on the anvil. Then the sparks will fly during contour grinding and preparations for heat treatments will be made. Only then will the steel get the necessary hardness. On the second day, we will grind the blade finish, make the handle out of wood and sharpen the blade so that your self-made knife is ready for use. WHICH KNIVES CAN I MAKE? In our beginners course you can make hidden tang knives with a blade length of up to 22 cm, a blade height of 5.5 cm and a convex or flat grind. This means that hunting and table knives as well as the most common types of kitchen knives are possible. In the advanced course you have even more options when it comes to special grinds and can forge knives with a blade length of up to 26 cm. For both courses you can think about the knife shape in advance or get inspiration on site. A large selection of materials awaits you in our course workshop. WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE PRICE? A variety of handle materials as well as high-quality carbon steels are already included in the price to make a beautiful, functional knife. Additional costs for special handle materials and Damascus steels are charged separately on site, based on usage. (For example: the additional cost for a 16–18 cm chef’s knife made of Damascus steel with 80 layers is approximately €110). The knives made during the blacksmithing course from carbon steel and Damascus steel are not stainless. Lunch is included in the course fee. NOTES Participation in the course is possible from 16 years of age with parental consent. People with pacemakers can only participate under certain restrictions. Pregnant and breastfeeding women cannot participate.
